Privacy Policy for
Seedling Reader

Seedling Reader is designed as a local-first library and reading app. This policy explains the files and reading data the app uses on your device and the limited network activity used only by features you choose.

Effective: September 11, 2026Developer: TeknobleEdition: Reader

1. Overview

Seedling Reader is local-first. Your library, reading position and reading notes are primarily processed and stored on your Android device. The Reader edition does not require a Seedling/Teknoble account and does not include an advertising backend.

Opening a book does not upload that book to Teknoble. Reader Premium's optional Google synchronization and AI features are covered separately in the Premium privacy policy.

2. Information stored locally

  • Library records such as book title, author, format, source location, thumbnail/cover, file fingerprint, file size, date added, last opened time and reading progress.
  • Library organization such as Favorites, Reading List, Completed, collections, hidden books, exclusions and Trash state.
  • Bookmarks, highlights, notes, quotes, Word Bank entries and their book/location references.
  • Reader settings such as typography, custom Reader font, app theme/font, page layout, search method, dictionary languages, Read Aloud preferences, scan folders and library appearance.
  • Temporary caches and generated thumbnails used to open and display supported books efficiently.

3. Books and document content

Reader accesses files you open, share to the app, or make available through Android storage/document access. It may scan folders you choose so supported books can appear in the library. The app can create bounded local cache copies or extracted archive entries when a format requires them for reading.

Your book text may be processed on-device for search, text-to-speech, dictionary lookup, highlighting and other reading functions. The Free Reader feature set does not automatically send your books to a Teknoble server.

4. Android permissions and access

  • Storage/document access to open, scan and manage books you make available to Reader. On older Android versions this can involve legacy storage permissions.
  • Internet for optional downloadable dictionary resources and other network-backed features you invoke.
  • Text-to-speech services through the Android TTS system and installed speech engines when you use Read Aloud.

Access is used for the reader feature that requires it; Reader is not designed to use precise location, contacts, call logs or microphone input for ordinary reading.

5. Optional online services

Dictionary resources

If you download an offline dictionary pack, the app contacts the dictionary source to retrieve the selected pack. Once installed, those packs can be used locally. If an online lookup source is selected, the selected word or phrase and required language information may be sent to that provider.

Android text-to-speech

Read Aloud uses the speech engine installed or selected on your device. Some third-party TTS engines may use network services under their own privacy terms; this behavior is controlled by the chosen TTS provider rather than Teknoble.

6. Data selling and advertising

Teknoble does not sell your Reader library, annotations or reading history to advertisers. Reader is not built around behavioral advertising or social reading profiles.

7. Retention and deletion

Local Reader data remains on your device until you delete individual items, clear Reader-managed data, reset Android app data or uninstall the app. Removing a library entry does not necessarily delete the original book unless you explicitly choose an action that deletes the source file.

8. Security

Reader uses Android application sandboxing and disables cleartext network traffic in the current application design. Custom app data and settings are stored within Android's app-managed storage unless you explicitly export or back them up.

9. Children

Seedling Reader is a general-purpose reading utility and is not directed specifically to children under 13. It does not create advertising profiles of readers.

10. Changes

This policy may change when Reader features, supported services or legal requirements change. Material updates will revise the effective date above.
